Learning Activities

TRAINING WEBSITE

This Autumn, we're launching our Cake Decorating initiative. We want to curate an online gallery of u3a members' best cake decorating skills and talents.

You can submit photos (or even videos!) of your sugarcraft work, full cakes, or just inspiration for others. We want to showcase your best work.

Please let your u3a friends know about this initiative, especially if you belong to a cake decorating group, so that we can get as many photos as possible showcased in our online gallery.

Entries from our u3a Members

I have just bought a cake decorating air brush and would like to learn techniques on how to use it.

Judith, Barnet u3a

cake decorated with 3 penguin paperbacks made of icing and 17 colourful candles

Judith said she used trial and error to make this cake!

"This was for my granddaughter's 17th birthday. She went on to complete an English Literature degree followed by an M.Res."

Susan, Stockton on Tees u3a

white cake with pastel pink sugarwork flowers
Susan made a 2 tier cake inspired by flowers for a wedding anniversary.

"I am a hobby baker and still taking lessons myself in sugar craft techniques. The sugar craft flowers and leaves were made using cutters and instructions. The design came from a wedding cake with some modifications."

Claire, Easingwold & District u3a

Square white cake decorated with colourful u3a activities in icing

Claire decorated this cake to celebrate Easingwold & District u3a’s 20th Anniversary.

"The items on it depict the groups we have."

Inspiration from our u3a Members

Val, Ashby u3a

Val created this two tier cake for Ashby u3a.

"I'm a happy amateur, with a "I will give it a go" mentality. I love all things hand crafting, so this seemed a good idea to me."

Jenny, Croydon u3a

Jenny has created many different cakes over the years.

"I can make lots of cake toppers, flowers – all sorts." You can see the variety of skills Jenny has honed on display below.

Jenny also took part in our #GenerationWOW collaboration with Specsavers, showing us how to cover a cake in fondant and buttercream, as well as how to pipe with buttercream and decorate iced cakes. Perhaps you can take some inspiration from Jenny's video!
